By fostering organic agriculture and responsible manufacturing practices, GOTS contributes to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), and SDG 13 (climate action).

Moreover, GOTS certification encourages continuous improvement and innovation in the textile sector, pushing manufacturers to adopt cleaner technologies, reduce waste, and conserve resources. It also helps raise consumer awareness about the environmental and social impacts of textile production, promoting responsible purchasing decisions and supporting the growth of a sustainable textile industry.

In conclusion, the Global Organic Textile Standard is a vital tool for driving sustainable practices within the textile industry. By checking for GOTS certification, consumers can make informed choices, supporting responsible manufacturing and contributing to a more sustainable future. The GOTS standard not only benefits the environment and the industry but also empowers consumers to make a difference through their purchasing decisions. As the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable textiles continues to grow, GOTS certification will remain an essential benchmark for the textile industry, its stakeholders, and the planet.
Explore more industry articles on our dedicated page.

Photography by Karl Wiggers, 2021

In-Depth Resources

GOTS Website

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), The Good Goods

C’est quoi le label GOTS ? In response, many brands are turning to certifications such as Oeko-Tex to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. In this article, we will explore the challenges and opportunities of Oeko-Tex certification for brands and European customers.

What is Oeko-Tex?

Oeko-Tex is an international organization that sets standards for textile production and certifies products that meet those standards. The organization was founded in 1992 by a group of textile research institutes in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with the goal of promoting sustainable and responsible textile production. Today, Oeko-Tex is recognized as a leading global certification for textiles.

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is the organization’s most well-known certification. It certifies that textile products are free from harmful substances and meet strict safety and environmental standards. To receive the Standard 100 certification, textile products must undergo rigorous testing for chemicals, including those that are banned or regulated by the European Union. The certification covers all stages of textile production, from raw materials to finished products.

Why is Oeko-Tex a challenge for brands?

For brands, achieving Oeko-Tex certification can be a complex and time-consuming process. It requires a significant investment of resources, including money, time, and personnel. Brands must also be willing to make changes to their supply chain, which can be a major challenge.

One of the biggest challenges for brands is identifying and eliminating harmful substances from their supply chain. This requires a deep understanding of the chemicals used in textile production, as well as the ability to track and trace those chemicals throughout the supply chain. Brands must also be able to demonstrate that they have implemented effective systems to ensure that harmful substances are not used in the production of their products.

Another challenge for brands is communicating the benefits of Oeko-Tex certification to consumers. While many consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of sustainability, they may not be familiar with Oeko-Tex or understand what the certification means. Brands must be able to effectively communicate the benefits of Oeko-Tex certification and why it is important to choose products that meet these standards.

Why is Oeko-Tex important for European customers?

For European customers, Oeko-Tex certification is an important indicator of a product’s safety and sustainability. The European Union has some of the most stringent regulations in the world when it comes to chemicals and textile production. As a result, European consumers have come to expect a high level of safety and quality from the products they purchase.

Oeko-Tex certification provides European consumers with the assurance that the products they are purchasing meet strict safety and environmental standards. This can be particularly important for products that come into direct contact with the skin, such as clothing, bedding, and towels. By choosing certified products, European consumers can be confident that they are making a responsible and sustainable choice.

Toward the future. Sustainability

In conclusion, Oeko-Tex certification is a key challenge for brands that are committed to sustainability and social responsibility. While it requires a significant investment of resources, it can provide brands with a competitive advantage and help them meet the growing demand for sustainable and ethical products. For European consumers, this certification is an important indicator of a product’s safety and sustainability. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, it is likely that Oeko-Tex certification will become even more important for brands and consumers alike.

The post Oeko-Tex: The Sustainable Choice for Brands and Consumers appeared first on VISION MODE.

Linen: The Sustainable Choice for Europe and Beyond

Guillaume Lelasseur

Earth

Industry

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry, more and more consumers are seeking out sustainable alternatives to traditional materials.

The post Linen: The Sustainable Choice for Europe and Beyond appeared first on VISION MODE.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry, more and more consumers are seeking out sustainable alternatives to traditional materials. One such material that has been gaining popularity in recent years is linen. The flax plant requires very little water and no pesticides or herbicides to grow, making it a much more environmentally friendly option than cotton, which is a notoriously water-intensive crop. In fact, flax uses only a fraction of the water that cotton requires, and it can be grown without the use of harmful chemicals. This makes linen not only a more sustainable choice for consumers, but also a better option for the planet.

Another benefit of linen is that it is biodegradable. Unlike synthetic fibers, which can take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill, linen will naturally break down over time, leaving no harmful residues behind. This is an important consideration for consumers who are concerned about the long-term impact of their clothing choices on the environment.

Social Responsibility of Linen

In addition to its environmental benefits, linen is also a socially responsible choice. Flax is primarily grown in Europe, and the majority of linen production takes place in the EU. This means that European customers who choose linen are supporting local farmers and manufacturers, and helping to create jobs in their own communities. Furthermore, linen is a labor-intensive crop that requires skilled workers to process the fibers into fabric. By choosing linen, consumers are supporting fair labor practices and ensuring that workers are paid a fair wage for their work.

Linen is also a durable and long-lasting material. Unlike some synthetic fibers that can break down and lose their shape over time, linen becomes softer and more comfortable with each wash. This means that linen clothing can last for many years, reducing the need for frequent replacements and helping to reduce waste.

Towards the future. Sustainability

One of the challenges of promoting linen as a sustainable alternative is that it can be more expensive than other materials. However, when the environmental and social benefits are taken into account, linen is actually a very cost-effective choice. Not only does it last longer than other materials, but it also requires less water and fewer chemicals to produce. This means that the overall cost of linen, when measured in terms of its environmental impact and social benefits, is actually much lower than that of other materials.

In conclusion, linen is a sustainable and socially responsible choice for European customers and beyond. Its low water requirements, lack of need for harmful chemicals, biodegradability, and durability make it an attractive alternative to traditional materials. By choosing linen, consumers can support local farmers and manufacturers, ensure fair labor practices, and reduce their environmental impact. While linen may be more expensive upfront, its long-term benefits make it a cost-effective choice for those who are committed to sustainability and social responsibility. As the world continues to grapple with the environmental and social challenges of the fashion industry, linen is an important part of the solution.

The post Linen: The Sustainable Choice for Europe and Beyond appeared first on VISION MODE.

Piñatex: A Sustainable Fabric Revolution

Mathis Reynaud

Industry

In recent years, the fashion industry has witnessed a growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly materials. The leaves, which are obtained from pineapple farms in the Philippines, are a byproduct of the fruit industry, making Piñatex an excellent example of upcycling. The leaves are stripped of their long fibers, which are then cleaned and processed to create a non-woven mesh.

The next step involves a mechanical process to create a textile. The fibers are mixed with a natural, plant-based binding agent, which forms a mesh that can be further treated to achieve different textures and finishes. The resulting material resembles traditional leather, both in terms of appearance and durability.

Pineapple leaf fiber, washing and drying

Sustainable Advantages

Piñatex offers several compelling benefits that make it an attractive alternative to traditional leather and other synthetic materials:

Piñatex Colors

Environmental Sustainability: By utilising pineapple leaf waste, Piñatex reduces agricultural waste and minimises the environmental impact.

Social Responsibility: The production of Piñatex creates additional income opportunities for pineapple farming communities.

Cruelty-Free: Piñatex is an animal-friendly material, offering a choice for conscious consumers who seek alternatives to animal-derived products.

Durability: Piñatex’s strong and durable fibers make it suitable for various applications, including shoes, bags and accessories.

Versatility: The strong fabric can be molded, stitched, and embossed, offering designers a wide range of creative possibilities.

Made with Piñatex

Jo-Anne Vernay footwear designs

Several brands have already embraced the utilization of this innovative fabric. This eco-friendly shift is paving the way for a new era of responsible consumerism and giving a whole new meaning to the term vintage. But what exactly does pre-loved mean, and why is it so important for the future of fashion?

What is Pre-Loved Fashion?

The term pre-loved refers to items that are no longer being produced and are re-sold to another person, offering a second life to once-treasured pieces. Unlike traditional second-hand items, pre-loved fashion pieces are held to a high-quality standard. This means they are well-maintained, carefully preserved, and retain much of their original charm. In essence, a pre-loved item has been cherished, nourished, and protected by its previous owner, ensuring that it maintains its value and appeal.

Gucci’s vintage Mini GG bag

The Rise of Pre-Loved in High Fashion

As the sustainable fashion movement gains momentum, an increasing number of luxury and ethical brands are incorporating pre-loved items into their offerings. Restitution: Désirabilité et réparabilité des objets pour 2042 at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. We witnessed many interesting projects about reparability on product design.

The background

With the guidance of the teacher Alexandre Fougea and the supervision of the design studio Noir Vif, this forward-looking approach and the importance of reflection have enabled students to come up with bold solutions that combine tangible objects addressing the issue of repairability and usage or service scenarios that contextualise their relevance.

Noir Vif is a design studio founded by André Fontes and Guillaume Lehoux in 2011, specialising in the creation of products and objects for new uses or markets. The two experienced designers complement their point of view with André’s experience as an engineer and Guillaume’s master’s degree in innovative design methods from ENSAM Paris.

This project is a partnership between DECATHLON and the École des Arts Décoratifs, where they are working together to support young designers in creating forward-looking projects that align with their values. The business is committed to listening and understanding the proposals of the new generations in order to address the challenges of the ecological transition, with exciting new ideas.

The exciting projects

The first group of students presented an innovative project at the exhibition called One Patch, One Story. The project focuses on creating value in repaired garments, rather than simply discarding them. The concept involves repairing clothes using patches that tell a unique story. For instance, if a jacket is torn during a hiking trip, it will be fixed with a patch featuring a cute design of the mountains. The students’ main aim is to give each item of clothing a symbolic story by adding these patches. This approach not only promotes sustainable fashion but also adds a personal touch to the clothing, making it more special to the wearer.

Different patterns of the One Patch, One Story project

Repaired garments of the One Patch, One Story project

Another noteworthy project showcased at the exhibition featured easily disassembling chairs designed for both indoor and outdoor use. The creators sought to introduce outdoor furniture into indoor spaces with more eco-friendly materials that can be easily replaced. By using sustainable materials, they hope to minimise the environmental impact of furniture production.

Prototype of disassembling chairs

The third group showcased a smartly designed bag and tent that use some of the same key components in their construction. This approach allows for quick and efficient repairs to be made in case of damage to either item. For example, if the tent breaks, the backpack contains interchangeable parts that can be easily swapped out for a speedy and straightforward fix. Similarly, if the backpack needs repairs, the tent has components that can be used to address the issue. This innovative project promotes sustainability by reducing the need for multiple sets of equipment and encourages outdoor enthusiasts to invest in durable and long-lasting gear that can be repaired rather than replaced.

Tent and bag with interchangeable pieces

Detail of attachable pieces

The fourth group’s presentation was one of the most captivating innovations at the exhibition — a unique concept called Coucou! that transforms a bicycle into a mobile sewing machine. While the idea of a mobile repairer is not entirely new, this particular implementation is both practical and efficient. The concept maintains the sporty aspect of cycling while repairing by using the bicycle to power the sewing machine, creating a unique and eco-friendly solution for on-the-go repairs. The saddle is inverted from the traditional bike configuration, allowing the user to pedal in the opposite direction to operate the sewing machine. This vintage-inspired concept promotes sustainability by offering a way to repair clothing anywhere, using a system that can travel with ease.

Description of the Coucou! project

Mobile sewing machine

The fifth group of students presented an engaging project designed for children, aimed at encouraging their creativity and instilling the desire to tinker with objects. The concept revolves around do-it-yourself (DIY) activities that are safe for children and involve easy-to-use tools and explanatory models. The focus is on repairing objects, as well as elevating them by introducing multiple shapes and creating a collection concept. The idea is not only to provide a fun and educational activity for children but also to potentially spark an interest in repairs as a future vocation. This project offers a safe and accessible way to introduce children to basic repair skills, promoting a sense of accomplishment and self-sufficiency.

Guides and tools for reparing objects

DIY tools for children

The following group presented an innovative concept of a bag that evolves over time, featuring detachable pieces that can be easily replaced, instead of buying a new bag each time. Their unique approach to bag design includes an assembly system with a basic module that builds the entire bag, as depicted in their designs. Additionally, the project features a modular design that allows for adaptability to different situations and moods, with a range of different pockets and colours to choose from, creating a unique style for each individual bag. The focus on sustainability and practicality is apparent in the design, with an emphasis on the ease of repair and longevity of the bag.

Details of detachable pieces

Prototype of the bag

The last group of students presented an innovative solution to address the difficulties faced by individuals when repairing products due to lack of information. They introduced the concept of an NFC (Near Field Communication) label that contains all the necessary information about a product, including its composition and repair instructions. This solution aims to address the common problem of people in France who intend to repair their items but lack the necessary information to do so.

The group showcased a service that involves a machine that scans the NFC tag on a broken object to identify it and send it to the appropriate repair system based on its identification. They opted for NFC technology instead of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) code, which is commonly used in the fashion industry, because NFC can hold more information and can also include a link to a website. Scanning the NFC tag provides the user with access to helpful videos and tutorials on how to repair their item without requiring professional assistance. This solution not only promotes sustainability but also empowers consumers to take charge of their repair needs, providing them with the necessary information and resources to extend the life of their products.

Concept of NFC project

Products with integrated NFC tag

Sustainability. Towards The Future

These projects not only demonstrated the creativity and resourcefulness of the student but also reflected a growing awareness of the need for sustainable and adaptable designs that can withstand the test of time. However, the concept of sustainable fashion is not entirely new, as we can see from the practices of the Soviet Union in the mid-twentieth century. Although the Soviet Union attempted to implement a system of fashion that would eradicate fashion, the people continued to produce clothes by hand at home, recycle, and reuse, resulting in a sustainable fashion approach.

Mass production in the mid-20th century?

The ideal of mass production was straightforward — the best fashion designers from Soviet fashion houses would create new garment designs, which would be transferred to production factories to promptly supply the USSR with modern clothing. The government-controlled light industry would quickly eradicate old and threadbare garments, and the Soviet citizen would permanently show off in new, fashionable designer clothes. The Soviet government would monitor citizens’ style to become more politically correct, predictable, close to an aesthetical perfection, medicinally and climatically suitable and convenient. It would completely eradicate the desire for fashion beyond the Iron Curtain. However, this never came to be.

Concept of the Prozodezhda dress, which never succeeded

Confronting the Soviet Union’s fashion industry with Jean Baudrillard’s concept of simulacrum, one could see an obvious resemblance between them.

Jean Baudrillard claims that humanity has replaced all reality with symbols and signs, and that human experience is merely a simulation of reality. This statement on which he wrote his philosophical book Simulacra and Simulation gets close to the concept of fashion that the Soviet Union intended to push.

The fashion industry seemed real from a distance, but when looked at closely, it was nothing more than a weird construction replacing reality with its representation. They tried to combine the Houses of Models (designer clothes to show the greatness of the Soviet Union) with mass production, and that’s when it didn’t happen. Many pieces’ pattern-making and specifications were not adapted enough for ready-to-wear, and the many production problems made the best clothing strictly limited, resulting in a situation similar to many other countries, with an elite who had access to the best clothes and a majority with zero new garments, so communism was not being applied effectively.

The subject of bipolarity of the USSR was addressed by many people on research papers:

The sewing ateliers (for the people) and houses of models were two parallel universes. Models were to emphasise the greatness of the Soviet Union (although then it was referred to differently), not made for ready-to-wear. Even though neither public nor private transportation was suitable for getting anywhere in those garments

Design proposals by Varvara Stepanova

Design proposals by Varvara Stepanova

Fashion industry and mass production in a planned economy could essentially be a utopian idea, utterly impossible. People were not recycling for ecological reasons but for economic ones. They used to be such an ideal zero waste society, with many government initiatives for pushing DIY and up-cycling so citizens could make and produce their garments due to the unsuccessful mass production practices of the system itself. It was clearly a need, but at least it was viewed as something positive, something that had important know-how, something to pass on to newer generations, as they passed the Singer sewing machine.

Citizens could make a new garment from two or more used ones, or from a combination of what was available. The Soviet government supported the do-it-yourself subculture by organising special sewing and construction training courses for adults and pushing people to keep using their existing clothes.

In conclusion, the Soviet Union’s fashion industry provides a fascinating case study of an attempted utopian approach to fashion and mass production that ultimately fell short. However, the people’s resourcefulness, creativity, and commitment, even in the face of limited resources and a challenging political environment, offer valuable lessons for today’s fashion industry.

As we continue to grapple with the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry, past societies’ approaches serve as a reminder that sustainable solutions often arise from unexpected places.

In-Depth Resources

Baudrillard’s Philosophy: Simulacra and Simulation in the 21st Century, Antonio Oraldi for The Collector, 2021

Fashion Meets Socialism: Fashion industry in the Soviet Union after the Second World War, Jukka Gronow and Sergey Zhuravlev, 2015

Sustainable Fashion Practices in the Soviet Union?, Simona Veilande for the Art Academy of Latvia, 2018

Were Jeans Really Illegal in the Soviet Union? And you might have wondered: how did we manage to connect with so many talented individuals? The answer lies in our visits to the Tranoï showroom during Paris Fashion Week.

What is Tranoï?

Tranoï is a key partner of the Paris Fashion Week trade show, which takes place twice annually for womenswear (in March and September) and twice for menswear (in February and June). As a B2B event, it serves global buyers who are seeking distinctive fashion offerings from a handpicked selection of fresh, ready-to-wear designers and accessory brands. These designers are carefully selected by Tranoï in collaboration with the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, creating a community of cutting-edge talent that attracts international attention.

Tranoï showroom at the the Palais Brongniart in March 2023

Since 1998, Tranoï has been a respected platform for showcasing emerging brands and helping them to gain exposure on the global stage. By connecting these designers with influential buyers from around the world, Tranoï plays an important role in enabling them to expand their reach and break into new markets. It’s no wonder that the event has earned a reputation for being an invaluable launchpad for new talent.

Winter Fall 2023 Collections at Paris Fashion Week

This season, the Palais Brongniart was a vibrant hub of creativity, with over 150 global brands and 40,000 buyers in attendance at the womenswear trade show. As we walked through the space, we were struck by the diverse range of visions on display, from conceptual brands operating outside of commercial markets to up-and-coming designers seeking to expand their reach.

Despite the variety of styles and approaches, there was one trend that stood out to us above all others: sustainability. While not every brand at the show had fully embraced this ethos, we were heartened to see a growing number of small creators prioritising ethical practices, such as local production and the use of carefully curated materials. These designers are not only passionate about fashion, but also about creating something of real value for society and for the upcoming future.

Tranoï showroom at the the Palais Brongniart in March 2023

Tranoï showroom at the the Palais Brongniart in March 2023

We had the pleasure of feeling the texture of new fabrics and chatting with some of the brightest international creators at the show, including PODYH, Evyïnit, and Aequamente.
