Ecological art is widely recognized as a contemporary art movement. Eco-conscious artists are responding to modern environmental threats, such as climate change, with their artworks. However, eco-art is not a new phenomenon. Aboriginal Australians have centered the environment through culture and spirituality for millennia. When prehistoric climate change occurred, they made sense of land, water, and sky changes through rock paintings. We can understand this as ancient eco-art.

Facing Prehistoric Climate Change

During the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, approximately 15,000 to 7,000 years ago, our planet exited the last ice age and experienced global warming. Rising sea levels transformed Australia. Aboriginal people became prehistoric climate refugees, fleeing inland to escape coastline erosion. Heavy storms flooded the dry continental interior. The landscape became wet and lush green. Waterholes flooded and snakes emerged from underground, while unknown creatures like pipefish washed ashore and rainbows appeared overhead.

Lush green forest, guenterguni, 2011.

Embracing Ecotheology: The Rainbow Serpent

Finally, sea levels stabilized approximately 6,000 years ago. In Arnhem Land, where many Aboriginal people today maintain their traditional culture, the climate settled into dry season and monsoonal wet season. Around this time, Aboriginal rock paintings began depicting the ‘Rainbow Serpent.’ This powerful creature is an Ancestral Being — known for creating the universe. It is associated with water, life-giving, and fertility.

Rainbow Serpent, John Speight, 2019.

When prehistoric climate conflicts ensued, Aboriginal people responded with ecotheology, aligning religion and nature to tackle environmental issues. Belief in Rainbow Serpents spread throughout Australia. Rock paintings told unifying stories of the Rainbow Serpent, who travels between waterholes using rainbows, performing acts of creation and destruction. It causes storms and flooding, ushering in the wet and dry seasons. Colorful rock paintings portrayed Rainbow Serpents, taking inspiration from pipefish, snakes, and rainbows. This ancient eco-art explained climate disruption and normalized the strange creatures washed ashore.

Rock Paintings Affirm Life

Rock painting in northern Australian cave, Darrell Lewis, 2023.

Aboriginal people expressed ecotheology through artistry. Rock art encouraged them to brave climate change, drawing strength from shared culture and common origins. Art-making rituals are communal and life-affirming. Artists paint human, animal, and plant life using rainbow colors to show pulsing vitality. The more ‘rainbowness’ something has, the greater its life force and spiritual essence. They repaint the paintings of their ancestors to rejuvenate the colors and connect past, present, and future.

Wilton Rock Art Shelter, Hiking the World.

Rock paintings pass down intergenerational wisdom and moral philosophies regarding the environment. Aboriginal people believe the cosmos is a living, breathing system. All of nature is interconnected, and they share kinship ties with all creatures. They ‘mind the universe,’ and the universe cares for them. As a result, the principle of mutual reciprocity governs their interactions with ecosystems. Aboriginal people view themselves as custodians of land, water, and air. Nature provides for them and enriches their culture in return. Their relationship to the environment is not exploitative — but mutually beneficial.

Eco-Art Shifts Our Paradigm

Aboriginal eco-art should inspire contemporary artists and environmentalists. As climate change unfolds today, we face the prospect of global migration and climate conflict. Aboriginal people endured climate chaos millennia ago. In response, they built an environmentally-conscious society that continues to advocate for ecological conservation. We have the opportunity to welcome a similar paradigm shift.

GOTS – The Gold Standard for Organic Textiles

GOTS was developed by leading standard setters to define globally recognized requirements for organic textiles. It covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. The standard ensures that the textile products are processed using environmentally and socially responsible methods, from harvesting raw materials to finishing the final product. By adhering to the GOTS criteria, textile manufacturers can minimize their environmental footprint, provide safe working conditions, and promote sustainable farming practices.

What to Check for GOTS Certification

For a textile product to carry the GOTS label, it must meet strict criteria and undergo rigorous inspections by an accredited certification body. Here are some essential aspects to check for GOTS certification:

Organic Fiber Content: The textile product must contain at least 70% certified organic fibers. For the “organic” label, the content should be 95% or more.

Prohibited Chemicals: GOTS prohibits the use of harmful chemicals, such as azo dyes, formaldehyde, heavy metals, and chlorine bleach, during processing and manufacturing.

Environmental Criteria: GOTS-certified operations must follow strict environmental guidelines, including wastewater treatment, energy and water management, and the use of natural or low-impact dyes and auxiliaries.

Social Criteria: GOTS requires manufacturers to adhere to the International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and prohibiting child labor.

Inspections and Certification: GOTS certification involves annual on-site inspections, extensive documentation, and regular updates to maintain compliance.

Greenhushing has emerged as a contemporary concept within the realm of environmental responsibility. You might know ‘Greenwashing.’ It’s common in fashion. Brands use it to appear eco-friendly with misleading claims.

‘Greenhushing’ is the latest addition to this lexicon, and refers to situations where a brand deliberately remains silent about its achievements, even if they are sincerely well-intentioned and credible.

Photography by Kristina Flour

IS GREENHUSHING THE NEW GREENWASHING?

At a time when over-informed consumers, and in particular the new generations X, Y and Z, are increasingly looking to brands that are mindful of their carbon footprint and ethical production practices due to recent years with the acceleration of global warming, some brands choose to not publicize their environmental efforts.

In greenhushing, no statements are made at all, or elements are understated, even when practices are positive. Brands opt for discreet communication, potentially hindering their environmental commitment visibility, but this may prevent them from:

Reaching eco-sensitive consumers,

Build a sustainable and responsible brand reputation, etc.

Photography by Matthew TenBruggencate

WHAT ABOUT INSIDE THE FASHION INDUSTRY

This is a trend that is already making itself felt in fashion and beyond. Greenhushing stands in contrast to greenwashing and might impede environmental advancements instead of facilitating them.

‘Companies sharing their experience can inspire others and lead to peer pressure.’ — Karine Basso

Indeed, one could consider greenhushing an essential aspect of the journey, emphasizing the substantial efforts needed to progress towards a more environmentally sustainable fashion industry.

During COP 27 in Egypt, held from November 6th to 18th 2022, the United Nations highlighted a recent trend observed among certain companies. They described ‘greenhushing’ as a practice adopted by too many companies. According to the United Nations, ‘greenhushing’ is when companies portray themselves as climate change champions while deliberately withholding the specifics of their environmental commitment.

The Question is: ‘Why do some brands choose to mask their environmental efforts?’

Brands may engage in greenhushing because they:

Fear repercussions, fear of being wrongly accused of greenwashing and not doing enough for the environmental cause because to value its environmental actions has now become a real challenge for brands,

Fear of communicating poorly, of choosing the wrong terms to use and therefore of impacting its brand image,

Fear that they actually have something to hide, because beneath the silence may lie positive actions. At times, silence or vagueness may signal hidden issues.

Photography by Janko Ferlič

To assert that something is “sustainable” suggests the ability to trace its entire supply chain, starting from the sourcing or extraction of raw materials in the case of synthetic fabrics, all the way through to the finishing processes. Consequently, there’s a risk of scrutiny and potential consequences if we cannot substantiate every aspect of this sustainability claim.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry, consumers are demanding more sustainable and ethical choices. In response, many brands are turning to certifications such as Oeko-Tex to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. In this article, we will explore the challenges and opportunities of Oeko-Tex certification for brands and European customers.

What is Oeko-Tex?

Oeko-Tex is an international organization that sets standards for textile production and certifies products that meet those standards. The organization was founded in 1992 by a group of textile research institutes in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland with the goal of promoting sustainable and responsible textile production. Today, Oeko-Tex is recognized as a leading global certification for textiles.

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is the organization’s most well-known certification. It certifies that textile products are free from harmful substances and meet strict safety and environmental standards. To receive the Standard 100 certification, textile products must undergo rigorous testing for chemicals, including those that are banned or regulated by the European Union. The certification covers all stages of textile production, from raw materials to finished products.

Why is Oeko-Tex a challenge for brands?

For brands, achieving Oeko-Tex certification can be a complex and time-consuming process. It requires a significant investment of resources, including money, time, and personnel. Brands must also be willing to make changes to their supply chain, which can be a major challenge.

One of the biggest challenges for brands is identifying and eliminating harmful substances from their supply chain. This requires a deep understanding of the chemicals used in textile production, as well as the ability to track and trace those chemicals throughout the supply chain. Brands must also be able to demonstrate that they have implemented effective systems to ensure that harmful substances are not used in the production of their products.

Another challenge for brands is communicating the benefits of Oeko-Tex certification to consumers. While many consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of sustainability, they may not be familiar with Oeko-Tex or understand what the certification means. Brands must be able to effectively communicate the benefits of Oeko-Tex certification and why it is important to choose products that meet these standards.

Why is Oeko-Tex important for European customers?

For European customers, Oeko-Tex certification is an important indicator of a product’s safety and sustainability. The European Union has some of the most stringent regulations in the world when it comes to chemicals and textile production. As a result, European consumers have come to expect a high level of safety and quality from the products they purchase.

Oeko-Tex certification provides European consumers with the assurance that the products they are purchasing meet strict safety and environmental standards. This can be particularly important for products that come into direct contact with the skin, such as clothing, bedding, and towels. By choosing certified products, European consumers can be confident that they are making a responsible and sustainable choice.

Toward the future. Sustainability

In conclusion, Oeko-Tex certification is a key challenge for brands that are committed to sustainability and social responsibility. While it requires a significant investment of resources, it can provide brands with a competitive advantage and help them meet the growing demand for sustainable and ethical products. For European consumers, this certification is an important indicator of a product’s safety and sustainability. As the fashion industry continues to evolve, it is likely that Oeko-Tex certification will become even more important for brands and consumers alike.

As the world becomes increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry, more and more consumers are seeking out sustainable alternatives to traditional materials. One such material that has been gaining popularity in recent years is linen. Linen is a natural fiber that is derived from the flax plant, and it has a number of environmental and social benefits that make it an attractive choice for eco-conscious consumers.

Advantages of Linen Sustainability

One of the key advantages of linen is its sustainability. The flax plant requires very little water and no pesticides or herbicides to grow, making it a much more environmentally friendly option than cotton, which is a notoriously water-intensive crop. In fact, flax uses only a fraction of the water that cotton requires, and it can be grown without the use of harmful chemicals. This makes linen not only a more sustainable choice for consumers, but also a better option for the planet.

Another benefit of linen is that it is biodegradable. Unlike synthetic fibers, which can take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill, linen will naturally break down over time, leaving no harmful residues behind. This is an important consideration for consumers who are concerned about the long-term impact of their clothing choices on the environment.

Social Responsibility of Linen

In addition to its environmental benefits, linen is also a socially responsible choice. Flax is primarily grown in Europe, and the majority of linen production takes place in the EU. This means that European customers who choose linen are supporting local farmers and manufacturers, and helping to create jobs in their own communities. Furthermore, linen is a labor-intensive crop that requires skilled workers to process the fibers into fabric. By choosing linen, consumers are supporting fair labor practices and ensuring that workers are paid a fair wage for their work.

Linen is also a durable and long-lasting material. Unlike some synthetic fibers that can break down and lose their shape over time, linen becomes softer and more comfortable with each wash. This means that linen clothing can last for many years, reducing the need for frequent replacements and helping to reduce waste.

Towards the future. Sustainability

One of the challenges of promoting linen as a sustainable alternative is that it can be more expensive than other materials. However, when the environmental and social benefits are taken into account, linen is actually a very cost-effective choice. Not only does it last longer than other materials, but it also requires less water and fewer chemicals to produce. This means that the overall cost of linen, when measured in terms of its environmental impact and social benefits, is actually much lower than that of other materials.

In conclusion, linen is a sustainable and socially responsible choice for European customers and beyond. Its low water requirements, lack of need for harmful chemicals, biodegradability, and durability make it an attractive alternative to traditional materials. By choosing linen, consumers can support local farmers and manufacturers, ensure fair labor practices, and reduce their environmental impact. While linen may be more expensive upfront, its long-term benefits make it a cost-effective choice for those who are committed to sustainability and social responsibility. As the world continues to grapple with the environmental and social challenges of the fashion industry, linen is an important part of the solution.

Recycled plastic, once hailed as a beacon of environmental hope, has increasingly faced scrutiny regarding its actual sustainability. At face value, recycling plastics seems like a promising solution, heralded for reducing the extraction of raw materials and curbing landfill growth. However, the reality is far more intricate, raising pertinent questions about its true sustainability and the challenges it grapples with.

The Promise of Sustainability

Plastic recycling is undoubtedly an essential component of the circular economy. By repurposing processed materials, it ostensibly lessens the strain on natural resources and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions. Advocates laud its ability to divert plastic waste from landfills, presenting it as a sustainable alternative. Yet, the statistics paint a different picture.

Getty Images

Startlingly, only a meager 9% of plastic waste undergoes recycling. While 15% is collected for recycling purposes, a staggering 40% of that is ultimately disposed of as residues. This highlights a significant inefficiency in the recycling process, a chasm between collection efforts and actual recycling rates.

The Myth of Complete Recyclability

Getty Images

One pivotal misconception revolves around the notion of plastics being 100% recyclable. Technologically speaking, all polymers possess recyclability potential. Some can be endlessly reused to create similar goods through processes like shredding and melting. However, the reality is starkly different. The sheer diversity of plastic types renders them unmixable, complicating recycling efforts. Moreover, many plastics degrade after a few uses, compromising their quality and rendering them unsuitable for recycling, leading to downcycling or mixing with virgin materials.

Challenges in Collection and Sorting

Waste management experts assert that the costly and intricate process of collecting and sorting plastics compounds the problem. With the vast array of plastic types and their inability to be melted together, the logistics of recycling become increasingly daunting. Furthermore, reused plastics tend to accumulate toxins, intensifying environmental concerns and posing health risks.

Getty Images

The Risks of Chemical Recycling

The allure of chemical recycling as a remedy to the plastic recycling conundrum has gained traction. However, this practice raises ethical and environmental red flags. Chemical recycling transforms plastic waste into smaller molecules, ostensibly to create fuel or low-grade plastics. Nonetheless, this method resembles incineration, emitting harmful toxins and pollutants, contributing to environmental degradation.

Getty Images

The Illusion of Endless Recyclability

Moreover, the mirage of endless recyclability evaporates upon closer inspection. Recycled plastics often necessitate mixing with virgin materials and, even then, can only undergo the recycling process two or three times before their quality deteriorates irreversibly. Unlike glass and aluminum, which maintain their integrity through recycling, plastics exhibit limitations that hinder their sustainable reusability.

Exploring Alternatives and the Road Ahead

Getty Images

Given these challenges, exploring alternatives becomes imperative. While addressing the complexity of plastic recycling remains important, embracing innovative solutions is crucial. Bioplastics derived from renewable sources and utilizing sustainable materials for packaging offer promising avenues. Implementing a shift towards a circular economy necessitates a comprehensive approach involving reduction, reuse, and responsible recycling practices.

In conclusion, the narrative surrounding recycled plastic’s sustainability isn’t straightforward. While it holds promise as a solution, its efficacy is impeded by logistical challenges, downcycling dilemmas, and environmental hazards. Rethinking our reliance on plastic, exploring alternative materials, and advocating for systemic changes are critical to achieving genuine sustainability in the fight against plastic pollution.

Last month, the construction of a new coal mine in Australia was blocked in order to save coral reefs and protect the great barrier. While it may seem like a no-brainer, it is a significant victory for environmental laws, as it is the first time that these laws have been used to block coal exploitation in the country.

What threatens the coral reefs today

Whether we’d like to believe it or not, the biggest threat to the the great barrier reef and corals all around the world, is not tourism, is not over-fishing and is not over-exploitation of the areas. The main culprit, you might have guessed, is global warming and water acidity. Long story short, the water has become too hot for corals to thrive in their natural habitat.

Ocean reefs protect shorelines and their communities from the ever-changing sea. Strong waves, storms and even sea hurricanes can be buffered through contact. They ensure the safety of many coastal communities, as well as their livelihoods, that depend on the activities related to the reef’s preservation and biodiversity, such as tourism.

Tourist diving, Photographed by ultramarinafoto

Groundbreaking and traditional tech to the rescue

In order to save coral reefs, many methods have been developed over the years. If used in coordination and if costs can be reduced (which experts like Sophie George, from the Capricorn Conservation Council, guarantee we can), these methods could easily help preserve, protect and, in a few years, repopulate coral reefs. Some of these include:

Cross-breeding: cross-breeding corals artificially in order to make them stronger and more resistant to warmer temperatures would allow to save more than a hundred species of coral.

Cryogenically frozen coral: Instead of cross-breeding, we could also freeze coral at an early stage, preserving them until it is time to reintroduce them.

Replanting with robots: In order to repopulate efficiently, robots could take charge. A smaller budget would then allow a much bigger regrowth, being less labour extensive. Robots could take charge of growing and grafting new coral onto existing reefs, so that they may finally merge as a single colony and live under the sea.

Coral seeding: Coral growth can take up to 10 years. Accelerating coral growth at the Australian National Sea Simulator and protecting growing coral from outside damage, allows scientists to aid in coral regrowth, speeding it up by at least half.

Healthy coral reefs, Photographed by Li Fei

Egg cryogeny is the most recent development on that front. Scientists have finally been able to successfully preserve. This means that, when the oceans become habitable for these species again, they will be easily reintroduced into their habitat. It has bought a significant amount of time for policy-makers to address the problem and comply to the 2030 Climate Target Plan and the European Green Deal.

Endanger the reef, endanger lives?

According to the Great Marine Reef Park authority, 90% of the reefs surveyed have been touched by bleaching. However, the Great Barrier Reef is not actually considered endangered.

While UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, continues to push for the gigantic living organism to be added onto the protectorate’s list, communities are sceptical about the impact it would have on their everyday lives.

A lot of coastal communities rely heavily on tourism and regulating it further could translate into shutting down activities essential to their livelihoods — as well as abandoning active projects for aquatic flora restoration. On the other hand, making the list could mean other sorts of funding and advantages for the region, such as further legal protection from exploitation.

As indicated by the Reef Restoration Foundation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the only way to successfully address climate change as a whole and save coral reefs for good.

The scientific expression ‘ecological exile’ is now sadly becoming a part of our common vocabularies, because it is becoming a much more common occurence. Just like the climate crisis it stems from, the phenomenon is now global.

What is ecological exile?

The term “ecological exile” refers to the forcible displacement of settled populations due to the ecology and climate crisis.

It is the academic term for being forced to leave one’s homeland because its environment is no longer safe or healthy, thanks to climate change. Thanks to abnormal rising sea levels, accelerated erosion, water shortages, agricultural overexploitation or geological changes, such as soil sinking or softening.

The designation became more widely used amongst academics after Canadian researcher Derek Galdwin, fellow of the country’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, published his book Ecological Exile: Spatial Injustice and Environmental Humanities.

From Latin America to Europe

Seasoned scientific journalist, founder and director of magazine Aquí Latinos, Mr. Perez Uberhuaga agreed to share with us his testimony on the subject.

Edwin Perez Uberhuaga emigrated to Europe 15 years ago from Bolivia. He married Esther, a lovely French woman. He now lives between Spain and Switzerland, traveling all over the continent to report on the ordinary and extraordinary lives of Latin Americans in Europe.

Edwin Perez Uberhuaga in Paris on the day of our interview, February 18th 2023

The magazine is a compilation of personal stories and think pieces on political events in Europe and the Americas. It reflects on the existence of latinos in Europe, some of whom did not move to this side of the pond by love, choice or ambition, but because ecological causes forced them to move.

Regarding the subject, Mr. Perez Uberhuaga wrote for us:

“I am a witness to modern ecological exile. In more than 30 years of traveling around the world as a journalist, I have witnessed a phenomenon that is not new but has intensified greatly: ecological exile. Almost everyone talks about political, economic, labor exiles, or migrations for study, work, love, or adventure, but few refer to the painful departure from a rural center affected by climate change or natural or war-induced tragedies.

I have seen farmers suffering from droughts or floods and then seen them in a European city suffering perhaps twice or triple the migration trauma, not understanding the rules of the “big city” (metro, trams, bank payments, living in apartment blocks, etc). I was in the Amazonian region of Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil (Bolpebra), affected by the overexploitation of gold and the earth for chemicals used to make cocaine. I visited the disappeared and ancient Lake Poopó in Oruro, Bolivia, walked in the hot zone of Barinas in Venezuela, or the Caribbean Sea of Colombia, whose fish do not live as long as they used to.

I looked at the now-contaminated Nile in Egypt or the more or less well-preserved waters of the Dead Sea in Israel, where the hydroponic system fights to sow in empty deserts. More recently, I saw the Tagus and Douro rivers that reach Spain and the birth of the Atlantic in Portugal, whose waters are also contaminated.

I have crossed the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps by bus, where the cold and snow forced many to go to the Latin American paradise. Today, these snowy mountains are losing snow and forcing artificial production for winter sports.

To all the garbage that existed before, now add the existence of masks, condoms, and beverage and medicine containers, which are ingested by animals that we later hunt and eat, within a very dangerous vicious circle.

Political and economic exile almost have clear rules. But ecological exile is more difficult to understand and explain.”

How does one fathom that an indigenous or farmer has to pack their bags to move to strange territory? How does one explain to a consul or a migration agent that there is no alternative?

Edwin Pérez Uberhuaga for Paradigme Mode

Quecha refugee

“In countries like Colombia, there was not only ecological exile, but also peasant leaders that were made to leave their land for opposing transnational corporations irrationally exploitating their lands’ water and natural resources.

In my three books and a hundred editions of the Aqui Latinos magazine, I try to inform about that process and, like others, show the “face of migration” that can take on many forms: field-field, field-city, or field-strange country.

Precisely that face burned by the sun and those calloused hands that today must fulfill other trades show us that there is still a great pending issue with this type of exiles. Born and raisedwith their Pachamama (Mother Earth), they are now far from their mountains, forests, and seas, without anyone understanding the magnitude of their condition as victims of modern ecocide.

Either way, we must return their lands, sanitized and productive. We must also understand the roots of their migration. It is the least we can do to return to a balance between man and nature” said Edwin Perez Uberhuaga on February 20th, 2023.

An added tension for European leaders

While Europe already faces political and economic migratory crisis, the phenomenon continues to spread. If it first became apparent when oversea migrants started to recount their stories and reasons for emigrating, it is also well underway inside our own walls.

Ecological exile has moved — and continues to move — people from Eastern to Western Europe or from the Mediterranean to northern lands, inside and outside of the Schengen space.

The other week we talked about how nature-based solutions are greatly beneficial for biodiversity and for reducing pollution and hazards on the environment.

Because we like to talk about sustainable materials on fashion, we are going to apply this terms to the agriculture of organic cotton. Cotton has been historically fashion’s most used fiber. When you see a tag in a fashion store telling you that your garment is made of organic cotton, how is it different from the traditional one? What benefits does it hold?

Organic cotton production

Organic cotton is more ecological than regular cotton in a number of ways. The main difference is that organic cotton is produced using methods that are environmentally-friendly, while regular cotton is produced using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and other harmful chemicals.

These chemicals can contaminate the soil, water, and air. By contrast, organic cotton is made using natural methods, such as compost and other organic matter, to support healthy plant growth and pest control. This means that organic cotton is not only better for the environment, but it is also safer for the people who produce it.

Another benefit of organic cotton is that it is typically produced using more sustainable farming methods. For example, organic cotton farmers often use cover crops to improve soil health and reduce erosion. This can help to support healthy and productive cotton plants, while also protecting the environment and preserving natural habitats.

Labor

Besides to these benefits, organic cotton is also produced using more ethical and fair labor practices. The social impact is a big part of sustainability along with the environmental one. Many organic cotton farmers are small-scale and use sustainable farming methods, providing better working conditions and higher incomes for the people who produce the cotton. Putting the profits in the hands of every person who worked among the way is the ethical way of doing.

By choosing organic cotton, consumers can support these values and help to protect the environment and the people who produce our clothing.

Water use

Another important issue of agriculture is the use of water. As it becomes more rare and valuable, it is important to measure the impact that its use has in the production of our garments.

According to some estimates, the production of regular cotton can require up to 20,000 liters of water per kilogram of cotton, while the production of organic cotton takes as little as 3,000 to 5,000 liters of water per kilogram. This means that, on average, organic cotton production uses approximately one fifth the amount of water as regular cotton production.

However, it is important to note that these numbers can vary depending on many factors, such as:

The specific farming practices used,

The climate and weather conditions, and

The type of cotton being grown.

For example, organic cotton farmers who use drip irrigation and other water-efficient techniques may be able to grow their cotton using even less water than the average of 3,000 liters per kilogram.

Finally, to ensure that the cotton garment you buy it’s organic, you should look for certificates. The most known is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), ensuring that the cotton fiber has been harvested and manufactured in an organic an ethical process, from start to end.

How can nature-based solutions help with sustainability?

Today we are going to talk about something that may seem fairly technical, but it’s something of great importance for our daily nutrition and clothing. Nature-based solutions for agriculture!

Nature-based solutions for agriculture involve using natural systems to support agricultural productivity. That’s instead of relying on chemical pesticides and other synthetic inputs. These solutions can include a wide range of approaches, such as planting cover crops, using compost and other organic matter to improve soil health, and introducing beneficial insects and other natural predators to control pests.

Photo by Federico Respini on Unsplash

What are cover crops? Cover crops are plants that are grown specifically to improve the health of the soil, instead of for harvest. These crops are often planted between regular growing seasons and they are one of the most important nature-based solutions in agriculture.

One of the key benefits of nature-based solutions is that they work with, rather than against natural systems. This means that they can be more sustainable and resilient in the long term. They take advantage of the strengths and synergies of natural systems.

For example, by planting cover crops, farmers can improve soil health, reduce erosion, and provide habitat for beneficial insects, which can support more productive crops. It’s a constant win-win.

Another advantage is that they are more effective than synthetic pesticides at controlling pests and diseases. This is because they take into account the interactions between different species in an ecosystem. They use them to disrupt pest populations and reduce their impact. For example, introducing natural predators such as lacewings and ladybugs can help to control aphid populations, without chemical pesticides, so dangerous for the environment and the people working on the plantation.

Photo by Gabriel Jimenez on Unsplash

Besides to their benefits for agriculture, nature-based solutions also support the conservation of biodiversity. With these approaches, farmers can help to preserve important ecological systems, such as wetlands and forests. They provide critical habitat for a wide range of species. This can help to promote a healthier and more balanced ecosystem, which can support both agriculture and conservation.

Overall, nature-based solutions for agriculture offer many benefits, including sustainability, resilience, and effectiveness. By using these approaches, farmers can support the health and productivity of their crops, while also protecting the environment and promoting biodiversity.

At Paradigme Mode we are engaged in showing you the best practices in all industries heading towards a more sustainable development. In this series about agriculture we will soon talk about how each one of fashion materials is harvested and the more ethical ways to do it. See you soon!
