What’s the story behind La Môme Bijou’s name and identity?

Isabelle Prat: I was given a beautiful book, by photographer Brassaï. In it, there was a photo of ‘La Môme Bijou’, a woman who lived in the 1930s. She was an old sex worker, who wore lots of pearls. Her name was Bijou. She was a character really, from Montmartre. As my studio overlooks the district, it just made sense. I found that it sounded very - very — Parisian. I liked the name, and it had the word ‘môme’ in it (which means ‘kid’ in French). Since I never really grew up, it suited me completely. In the universe, there is childhood, color, and joy. There are lots of little details that connect.

What’s your favourite jewelry piece you’ve created?

Isabelle Prat: That would be my first collection: In My Bubble. I thought it was fun to have made a collection with two totally different parts, both incorporating bubbles — either comic bubbles or soap bubbles. I find it quite amusing.

The first part uses onomatopoeic comic bubbles as jewelry. I find it quite playful with its messages. What is pleasant and funny is that the onomatopoeias are placed in meaningful places. For example, the bubble worn around your neck says: ‘Blah Blah Blah.’ It’s very Lichtenstein — a jewelry version. And the comic bubbles are indeed completely inspired by pop artist Lichtenstein.

Inside the showroom of La môme bijou

The second part is soap bubble jewelry. I loved playing with soap bubbles when I was little, blowing soap bubbles with dishwasher liquid and a small tube. The beads I used have this ‘soap bubble’ effect.

How did you learn to express yourself through metal?

Isabelle Prat: I learned at school, 40 years ago now. We produced jewels. We started with wire and really learned the basics. After that, I learned from a jeweler, who really taught me all the techniques, from making an alloy of gold — ‘melt it’, ‘lay it flat’, ‘shape the metal plane’ — to creating pieces for artists or particular clients. It was very enriching.

What is the most unconventional material you have worked with?

Isabelle Prat: The feathers that I found in the Moulin Rouge workshops! I made a fairly visual and strong collection called ‘Bird of Paradise’. I found these beautiful burnt ostrich feathers in a workshop in Montmartre. They are from the ostrich’s moult, not plucked from them. The feathers were collected, assembled and died in a wide array of colours by the workshop. I used my favorite range of rainbow shades for the jewels, and also I created a fairly interesting montage marrying feathers and cordons. It made for quite visual pieces, while staying very light.

Describe your perfect creative day.

Isabelle Prat: Where would I go? A very sunny place. During the holidays. I’d have an idea, while on a visit to a museum or on the beach, when someone who inspires me passes by, perhaps because they are wearing something particular that I would never have seen otherwise.

Oftentimes, we give up on creating because we’re caught up with life and don’t really have time to think or open up our imagination. It is rather in escaping elsewhere that I find inspiration. When I’m on the move, the ideas come.

What does the ‘super-vitamin world’ you dream of look like?

Isabelle Prat: Being dressed in color, or even just having a colorful accessory, helps you start the day with a smile — a little more energy than dressing in gray, black or brown. I am quite partial to colour all year round, but even more so when the weather is gloomy. In winter and autumn, I don’t understand why people dress in black. Colour is important when the weather is gray, as it often is in cities, be it Paris or elsewhere.

Details inside the atelier of La môme bijou

How do you see the intersection of technology and jewelry design evolving in the next decade?

Isabelle Prat: Today, a lot of jewelry is made with computer-aided design. It’s done by software, and printed in 3D. I call on people who have mastered this knowledge to create certain collections, but I am more on the artisanal side. I really like to do things by hand. I am not too into technology, especially since I decided to start making jewelry with ‘grand feu’ enamel, an ancestral technique. I think it’s good to also keep the old methods for making jewelry.

La Môme Bijou’: Humans as beacons of colour.

‘La Môme Bijou’ is a playground, beckoning to those with youthful hearts. The brand imagines a supercharged world of bright and stimulating people. It is jewelry that dares to be frivolous and irreverent, reclaiming the lighthearted spirit of childhood. The wearer transforms into a beacon of colour, spreading joy and whimsy all around them through beads and bubbles, inviting others to embrace the luxury of play.

How did a spiritual retreat in Peru inspire Spiritum Paris?

Jonathan D.: I went on a shamanic retreat in Peru, with ayahuasca. It is a sacred plant that you take with shamans. When the shaman sings, you go into a trance for six hours. A spiritual retreat with ayahuasca is very deep, where you transform and heal your soul.

Someone asked me my birthday and gave me my life path number. My life path number is one. One is the number of ambition — leader, creator, entrepreneur. This was the big moment of my life that helped me and gave me the creativity to create my brand. I learned the signification of all the numbers. I let my creativity put scents to all the numbers, and I developed olfactive scents.

My brand, It’s not for everyone. It’s for people in spiritual awakening.

How does your brand embrace numerology?

Jonathan D.: Two years ago, I launched my brand with a collection of nine perfumes inspired by the nine numbers of numerology — nine life path numbers. My mission when I launched was just to give people their life path number.

For example, number one is the number of ambition. Number two is the number of intuition. Three: harmony and communication, four: realization, five: protection. As such, I put a special energy in all my perfumes to connect with the person. This is my mission with Spiritum Paris. It’s to make others’ life mission known, to trust in it and follow their destiny.

A memorable story about the creation of your favorite fragrance?

Jonathan D.: For the opening of the shop, I launched ‘Shamanism’. ‘Shamanism’ represents the olfactive memory of my first shamanic ceremony in Peru. The main ingredient of this perfume is sandalwood, since I was wearing a perfume with strong sandalwood notes during my first shamanic ceremony, and we were burning sandalwood incense. It has sandalwood, incense, sage, rose, amber and musk. It’s the fragrance of my life transformation.

How do you believe scent influences the mind, body and spirit?

Jonathan D.: As many people know, sandalwood sacralizes. Sandalwood incense elevates your spirit. Sage purifies and protects. This is the common base of all my perfumes, and I trust in it. All scents have powers, and how I use them depends on the number. For example, rose is connected to the power of love. Woods are strong and give you energy, just like cinnamon and vanilla. When you put on perfume, some scents give you emotion, others memories, others still souvenirs. To help you live your life, the nose has more power than any other senses.

If you could create a signature scent for any historical figure, who would it be?

Jontahan D.: It would be for Gandhi. And it would be a perfume with a sandalwood incense and sage base, and some spicy pepper curcuma (turmeric). Something very woody with incense, because he’s a spiritual person. Everyone in the world knows Gandhi.

How do your fragrances connect people with the natural world?

Jonathan D.: Above all, I work with authenticity and with love. I use good quality ingredients, because you can’t call your brand Spiritum Paris and use plastic or materials that don’t respect nature. For instance, I use cork for my packaging.

Cork is the clothing of the tree. Those clothes regenerate every ten years, so Spiritum Paris doesn’t cut trees. To me, it’s the most sustainable material you can use as packaging. Another example: my bottles are black — I us special paint for the glass because ultraviolet light kills the perfume.

Sometimes people ask, ‘Is your perfume 100% natural?’ I say no, because 100% natural scents is not ideal. Some raw materials are scarce around the world. I use a mix of 50% natural oils and 50% synthetic scents. My perfumes are refillable. If the customers want to refill, they will have to come to the boutique.

What travel destination would Spiritum Paris be?

Jonathan D.: As a destination, I think it’s the cosmos. You don’t have a special destination in this world for the spiritual world.

A higher plane

At Spiritum Paris’s boutique, visitors ascend to a higher plane of existence. They breathe in the scents of the cosmos — ‘Wisdom Universe’, ‘Builder of Future’, ‘Carnal Spirit’. In this environment, heaven and earth seem to collide. The delicate, powdery scent of moondust is footsteps apart from the ripe, hearty aroma of sunshine. Spiritum Paris empowers visitors with knowledge of their life mission. They discover their place in the universe. They emerge from the shop walking the spiritual path — towards wellness, soulful living, and balance with nature.

Art tourism is a form of travel that revolves around engaging with artistic and cultural activities, in touristic or historical settings. Sometimes referred to as creative tourism, It involves visiting destinations that also feature art display. It offers a unique travel experience and contributes to the conservation and reappropriation of cultural spaces that might have otherwise been lost.

Breathing Fresh Air into History

For visitors, Art Tourism translates in exploring historical sites, museums, galleries, towns or exhibits with a fresh perspective. It can also look like participating in creative workshops or seeing artists perform on location. But why does it matter?

Street artists performing at the Fringe Festival, in the historic center of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland.
© David Monteith-Hodge / The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society

Artistic initiatives and interventions create new interest in historical destinations that might have otherwise been overlooked, forgotten or underfunded.

The practice promotes the conservation of historical destinations and cultural spaces that might have fallen into disrepair or neglect. By attracting tourists with art, these places receive much-needed attention and investment for their preservation. It allows communities to fund the restoration of historical buildings and even revitalise neighbourhoods. They prevent the loss of invaluable cultural heritage.

Many small towns and villages in Europe, for example, have witnessed significant economic development through artistic tourism. By leveraging their cultural assets and heritage, these destinations attract tourists, create jobs and foster a vibrant local economy.

Associations, donors and international organizations play a crucial role in supporting these sort of endeavors, often working on a non-profit basis to ensure the sustainability of the projects and their positive impact on the local community.

(La la la la) Art tourism is all around the world

Due to its success in rekindling local economies, artistic tourism has recently multiplied throughout Europe and the rest of the globe. Initiatives related to the practice can manifest in the most disparate regions, each with its unique artistic heritage waiting to be explored.

One positive example is PROYECTO ARMAZÓN, a project led by Margarita Asuar in Spain. This initiative revitalizes old castles by transforming them into exhibition spaces featuring art related to the 17 OECD sustainability goals.

A word of caution

Not all art tourism initiatives share the same non-profit and community-focused goals. While some attractions may present themselves as such, they may primarily serve commercial and sales objectives. Instead of helping local populations, preserving the environment or even supporting local economies, they might even hinder them. This addresses ventures such as the Abu Dhabi Louvre.

Differentiating between projects that genuinely support local communities and those driven purely by commercial interests is crucial in understanding the true nature of art tourism. It is essential to critically evaluate such initiatives to ensure they align with the principles of non-profit, community development and cultural preservation, allowing art tourism to truly make a positive impact on the places it seeks to showcase and support.

Sustainability. Last but not least.

By promoting the conservation and reappropriation of cultural spaces, this creative form of tourism fosters sustainable economic development in rural areas. It leads to enrichment for both travellers and local communities.

Art tourism offers a unique, sustainable and rewarding travel experience that combines cultural exploration, creativity and the preservation of historical heritage.

Autodidact artist Nathalie Correia displays her work for the ‘Women in Art’ project. The international project is dedicated to giving women their long due and deserved visibility in a male dominated art world. ‘Women in Art’ is led by Spanish art curator Margarita Asuar. Together, they created Nathalie’s exhibit “Equilibre”.

About the project. Women In Art.

Last year, art curator and activist Margarita Asuar launched the program ‘Women In Art’ after realizing how lacking and prejudiced the art market remained towards women artists. Its goal is to restore balance. It will not stop until women artists around the world as just as represented as men in the museums and galleries of the world.

The initiative is a collective project under the umbrella of the Spanish association Asociación Armazón. The association is notably responsible for bringing into the world artful translations of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The project quickly grew beyond Europe. It is now co-curated by other amazing women around the world, such as Maria Jannelli in Italy, María de la Vega in Argentina or Tian Luo in China. Every country has their own co-curator. Franco-spanish artist and gallerist Lina Martín Calvo is the project lead in France.

About the artist. Nathalie Correia.

Nathalie Correia has always been an artist. For a very long time, Nathalie expressed herself through different forms of art. She danced ballet. She even studied fashion and style.

But she felt her creativity was restricted by the confines of precise movement and designated canvasses. The only option for her was to become a painter and a sculptor, capable of creating her own.

About the artwork and the exhibit. EquiLibre.

A collection of international characters and figures came to the opening of Nathalie’s exhibit at Atelier Galería de Arte, in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.

Black and white with touches of blue came to make a strong statement about internal reflexions.

Her selected work spoke of societal themes like overpopulation, as well as personal experiences like going to the beach or feeling yourself change.

Louise takes care of the creative direction. They are also mother and daughter.

Karen has been a business woman for years and an independent entrepreneur since 2006.
Last month, the construction of a new coal mine in Australia was blocked in order to save coral reefs and protect the great barrier. While it may seem like a no-brainer, it is a significant victory for environmental laws, as it is the first time that these laws have been used to block coal exploitation in the country.

What threatens the coral reefs today

Whether we’d like to believe it or not, the biggest threat to the the great barrier reef and corals all around the world, is not tourism, is not over-fishing and is not over-exploitation of the areas. The main culprit, you might have guessed, is global warming and water acidity. Long story short, the water has become too hot for corals to thrive in their natural habitat.

Ocean reefs protect shorelines and their communities from the ever-changing sea. Strong waves, storms and even sea hurricanes can be buffered through contact. They ensure the safety of many coastal communities, as well as their livelihoods, that depend on the activities related to the reef’s preservation and biodiversity, such as tourism.

Tourist diving, Photographed by ultramarinafoto

Groundbreaking and traditional tech to the rescue

In order to save coral reefs, many methods have been developed over the years. If used in coordination and if costs can be reduced (which experts like Sophie George, from the Capricorn Conservation Council, guarantee we can), these methods could easily help preserve, protect and, in a few years, repopulate coral reefs. Some of these include:

Cross-breeding: cross-breeding corals artificially in order to make them stronger and more resistant to warmer temperatures would allow to save more than a hundred species of coral.

Cryogenically frozen coral: Instead of cross-breeding, we could also freeze coral at an early stage, preserving them until it is time to reintroduce them.

Replanting with robots: In order to repopulate efficiently, robots could take charge. A smaller budget would then allow a much bigger regrowth, being less labour extensive. Robots could take charge of growing and grafting new coral onto existing reefs, so that they may finally merge as a single colony and live under the sea.

Coral seeding: Coral growth can take up to 10 years. Accelerating coral growth at the Australian National Sea Simulator and protecting growing coral from outside damage, allows scientists to aid in coral regrowth, speeding it up by at least half.

Healthy coral reefs, Photographed by Li Fei

Egg cryogeny is the most recent development on that front. Scientists have finally been able to successfully preserve. This means that, when the oceans become habitable for these species again, they will be easily reintroduced into their habitat. It has bought a significant amount of time for policy-makers to address the problem and comply to the 2030 Climate Target Plan and the European Green Deal.

Endanger the reef, endanger lives?

According to the Great Marine Reef Park authority, 90% of the reefs surveyed have been touched by bleaching. However, the Great Barrier Reef is not actually considered endangered.

While UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, continues to push for the gigantic living organism to be added onto the protectorate’s list, communities are sceptical about the impact it would have on their everyday lives.

A lot of coastal communities rely heavily on tourism and regulating it further could translate into shutting down activities essential to their livelihoods — as well as abandoning active projects for aquatic flora restoration. On the other hand, making the list could mean other sorts of funding and advantages for the region, such as further legal protection from exploitation.

As indicated by the Reef Restoration Foundation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the only way to successfully address climate change as a whole and save coral reefs for good.

We are a fashion company from Bologna, Emilia-Romagna. We produce 3 brands. The first is a knitwear brand. We keep the machines inside the company building, so everything is produced internally. The other two brands are also made in Emilia-Romagna with Italian fabrics purchased from Italian manufacturers. And all of the production process is also Italian. Dyeing, everything.

Lorenza Danielli, Fashion designer

The knitwear brand she refers to is MJW, run by herself, her sister Veronica and their mother Maria Grazia Albonetti, who is also the majority share owner of H+ Cube. Maria Grazia has worked in fashion for over thirty years.

H+ Cube’s most important owned brand is Hannoh, directed by the established German designer Hanno Wessel.

Using high quality manufacturers in Emilia-Romagna, AEQUAMENTE brings a particular sensibility to comfort clothing. Their colour palettes change with every season. For now, we have seen soft whites, beiges and dark navy tones. They never focus on only one types of pieces, fabricating coordinated jacket and trousers but also lightweight dresses and jumpsuits.

The brand combines easy and delicate silhouettes to luxurious materials. The sensibility projected by the design pieces come in materials such as silk, cotton, cashmere and linen.

Extract of Aequamente’s website, featuring their brand universe.

Autumn-Winter 2023 at Paris Fashion Week

Light green, grays and light navy tones have come to enrich the brand’s colour spectrum this season. But soft whites and dark blues steal the show, as shown by Lorenza herself when picking out the piece that most represents the current collection, a surprising cashmere overcoat:

Overcoat (most representative piece according to the designer), Cashmere

This collection centers around fabric composition. The colour palette created brings a sense of freshness often seen in summer or spring to this Winter-Autumn season.

Sustainability. Towards the future.

When it comes to durability, Lorenza and her family use fabrics, such as organic cotton or acetate, that are extremely durable and can be worn for years to come.

The scientific expression ‘ecological exile’ is now sadly becoming a part of our common vocabularies, because it is becoming a much more common occurence. Just like the climate crisis it stems from, the phenomenon is now global.

What is ecological exile?

The term “ecological exile” refers to the forcible displacement of settled populations due to the ecology and climate crisis.

It is the academic term for being forced to leave one’s homeland because its environment is no longer safe or healthy, thanks to climate change. Thanks to abnormal rising sea levels, accelerated erosion, water shortages, agricultural overexploitation or geological changes, such as soil sinking or softening.

The designation became more widely used amongst academics after Canadian researcher Derek Galdwin, fellow of the country’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, published his book Ecological Exile: Spatial Injustice and Environmental Humanities.

From Latin America to Europe

Seasoned scientific journalist, founder and director of magazine Aquí Latinos, Mr. Perez Uberhuaga agreed to share with us his testimony on the subject.

Edwin Perez Uberhuaga emigrated to Europe 15 years ago from Bolivia. He married Esther, a lovely French woman. He now lives between Spain and Switzerland, traveling all over the continent to report on the ordinary and extraordinary lives of Latin Americans in Europe.

Edwin Perez Uberhuaga in Paris on the day of our interview, February 18th 2023

The magazine is a compilation of personal stories and think pieces on political events in Europe and the Americas. It reflects on the existence of latinos in Europe, some of whom did not move to this side of the pond by love, choice or ambition, but because ecological causes forced them to move.

Regarding the subject, Mr. Perez Uberhuaga wrote for us:

“I am a witness to modern ecological exile. In more than 30 years of traveling around the world as a journalist, I have witnessed a phenomenon that is not new but has intensified greatly: ecological exile. Almost everyone talks about political, economic, labor exiles, or migrations for study, work, love, or adventure, but few refer to the painful departure from a rural center affected by climate change or natural or war-induced tragedies.

I have seen farmers suffering from droughts or floods and then seen them in a European city suffering perhaps twice or triple the migration trauma, not understanding the rules of the “big city” (metro, trams, bank payments, living in apartment blocks, etc). I was in the Amazonian region of Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil (Bolpebra), affected by the overexploitation of gold and the earth for chemicals used to make cocaine. I visited the disappeared and ancient Lake Poopó in Oruro, Bolivia, walked in the hot zone of Barinas in Venezuela, or the Caribbean Sea of Colombia, whose fish do not live as long as they used to.

I looked at the now-contaminated Nile in Egypt or the more or less well-preserved waters of the Dead Sea in Israel, where the hydroponic system fights to sow in empty deserts. More recently, I saw the Tagus and Douro rivers that reach Spain and the birth of the Atlantic in Portugal, whose waters are also contaminated.

I have crossed the Swiss, French, and Italian Alps by bus, where the cold and snow forced many to go to the Latin American paradise. Today, these snowy mountains are losing snow and forcing artificial production for winter sports.

To all the garbage that existed before, now add the existence of masks, condoms, and beverage and medicine containers, which are ingested by animals that we later hunt and eat, within a very dangerous vicious circle.

Political and economic exile almost have clear rules. But ecological exile is more difficult to understand and explain.”

How does one fathom that an indigenous or farmer has to pack their bags to move to strange territory? How does one explain to a consul or a migration agent that there is no alternative?

Edwin Pérez Uberhuaga for Paradigme Mode

Quecha refugee

“In countries like Colombia, there was not only ecological exile, but also peasant leaders that were made to leave their land for opposing transnational corporations irrationally exploitating their lands’ water and natural resources.

In my three books and a hundred editions of the Aqui Latinos magazine, I try to inform about that process and, like others, show the “face of migration” that can take on many forms: field-field, field-city, or field-strange country.

Precisely that face burned by the sun and those calloused hands that today must fulfill other trades show us that there is still a great pending issue with this type of exiles. Born and raisedwith their Pachamama (Mother Earth), they are now far from their mountains, forests, and seas, without anyone understanding the magnitude of their condition as victims of modern ecocide.

Either way, we must return their lands, sanitized and productive. We must also understand the roots of their migration. It is the least we can do to return to a balance between man and nature” said Edwin Perez Uberhuaga on February 20th, 2023.

An added tension for European leaders

While Europe already faces political and economic migratory crisis, the phenomenon continues to spread. If it first became apparent when oversea migrants started to recount their stories and reasons for emigrating, it is also well underway inside our own walls.

Ecological exile has moved — and continues to move — people from Eastern to Western Europe or from the Mediterranean to northern lands, inside and outside of the Schengen space.

Founded by neapoletan fashion designer Dada Maio, her brand has a beautifully bittersweet story. The idea seems awfully simple. Upcycle and reinvent traditional men’s wardrobe. But the idea birthed from a tragic event: her father’s death.

Through her work, she lets go of her grief and celebrates life: her father’s but also all of our fathers’, grand-fathers’, and of all those great men that, in their own simple or private way, touched and transformed our life stories.

Sustainability. Towards the future.

One rarely sees high-fashion be as sustainable as DADMAX’s proposal and manifesto. Upcycling is the root of fashionable sustainability itself. Reinventing, recuperating, transforming. It also means little to no waste, with no need of new fabrics, dyes or carbon release.

In addition, the cutouts are preciously kept to be eventually reclaimed for later pieces or inspiration.

Winter-Autumn 2023 at Paris Fashion Week.

Both nostalgic and ground-breaking, Dada’s style captures and fascinates the eye contrasting tradition with grunge. This collection was no different: acidic strings of colours came and infused light into traditionally sober blazers.

Her new piece, “Fathers”, stands out in this collection, according to the designer herself, as the one most representative of DADAMAX’s message. The bright pink used in the lettering clashes in harmony with the classic black blazer underneath. That electric colour also breaks gender norms, bringing a powerful feminine element to the solidly and universally masculine word ‘fathers’ and to the first form of masculinity we come in contact with in life.

December is here; ‘tis the season for hot chocolate, loving gatherings and gingerbread… Keep warm and cozy despite this year’s energetic sobriety recommendations, while staying guilt-free and cute.

We’ve hand-picked some of the cutest eco-friendly sweaters and jumpers for the holiday season. These brands produce their sweaters in the European Union, in ethical factories with sustainable materials.

Here’s our selection for TOP 3 (in no particular order):

From Paris — Sézane

TRUDY JUMPER BY SÉZANE

This sweater is a cozy and stylish mix of kid mohair and wool, perfect for keeping warm on chilly days. It has a slightly high neckline that’s closed with a shoulder placket, and the rib knitting is adorned with beaded details for an extra touch of glamour.

Plus, it’s made in Europe in certified factories and comes in recycled packaging, so you can feel good about your purchase. Wear it on a cold evening with your favourite winter boots for a chic, comfortable look.

From Barcelona — Two thirds

This cozy and sustainable sweater is perfect for snuggling up on a chilly day. The raglan sleeves and ribbed neck and edges give it a relaxed and comfortable fit, while the whale embroidery adds a touch of whimsy.

Made with 100% organic cotton and crafted in Portugal, this sweater is not only soft and stylish, but also environmentally friendly. Two thirds is a Spanish brand commited to sustainability and fairness.

From England — British Christmas Jumpers

And of a course, a fluffy Christmas themed jumper could not be missing from this list. This sweater is made from 100% recycled raw materials, including 60% regenerated cotton and 40% recycled bottles, as if love and care for the environment were prescribed by Christmas too. The fine gauge knit and supersoft feel make it a snuggly choice for the holiday season.

You can feel at ease knowing that it was made using renewable energy in Great Britain. Get ready to jingle all the way in this festive and sustainable sweater!
