What’s the story behind La Môme Bijou’s name and identity?

Isabelle Prat: I was given a beautiful book, by photographer Brassaï. In it, there was a photo of ‘La Môme Bijou’, a woman who lived in the 1930s. She was an old sex worker, who wore lots of pearls. Her name was Bijou. She was a character really, from Montmartre. As my studio overlooks the district, it just made sense. I found that it sounded very - very — Parisian. I liked the name, and it had the word ‘môme’ in it (which means ‘kid’ in French). Since I never really grew up, it suited me completely. In the universe, there is childhood, color, and joy. There are lots of little details that connect.

What’s your favourite jewelry piece you’ve created?

Isabelle Prat: That would be my first collection: In My Bubble. I thought it was fun to have made a collection with two totally different parts, both incorporating bubbles — either comic bubbles or soap bubbles. I find it quite amusing.

The first part uses onomatopoeic comic bubbles as jewelry. I find it quite playful with its messages. What is pleasant and funny is that the onomatopoeias are placed in meaningful places. For example, the bubble worn around your neck says: ‘Blah Blah Blah.’ It’s very Lichtenstein — a jewelry version. And the comic bubbles are indeed completely inspired by pop artist Lichtenstein.

Inside the showroom of La môme bijou

The second part is soap bubble jewelry. I loved playing with soap bubbles when I was little, blowing soap bubbles with dishwasher liquid and a small tube. The beads I used have this ‘soap bubble’ effect.

How did you learn to express yourself through metal?

Isabelle Prat: I learned at school, 40 years ago now. We produced jewels. We started with wire and really learned the basics. After that, I learned from a jeweler, who really taught me all the techniques, from making an alloy of gold — ‘melt it’, ‘lay it flat’, ‘shape the metal plane’ — to creating pieces for artists or particular clients. It was very enriching.

What is the most unconventional material you have worked with?

Isabelle Prat: The feathers that I found in the Moulin Rouge workshops! I made a fairly visual and strong collection called ‘Bird of Paradise’. I found these beautiful burnt ostrich feathers in a workshop in Montmartre. They are from the ostrich’s moult, not plucked from them. The feathers were collected, assembled and died in a wide array of colours by the workshop. I used my favorite range of rainbow shades for the jewels, and also I created a fairly interesting montage marrying feathers and cordons. It made for quite visual pieces, while staying very light.

Describe your perfect creative day.

Isabelle Prat: Where would I go? A very sunny place. During the holidays. I’d have an idea, while on a visit to a museum or on the beach, when someone who inspires me passes by, perhaps because they are wearing something particular that I would never have seen otherwise.

Oftentimes, we give up on creating because we’re caught up with life and don’t really have time to think or open up our imagination. It is rather in escaping elsewhere that I find inspiration. When I’m on the move, the ideas come.

What does the ‘super-vitamin world’ you dream of look like?

Isabelle Prat: Being dressed in color, or even just having a colorful accessory, helps you start the day with a smile — a little more energy than dressing in gray, black or brown. I am quite partial to colour all year round, but even more so when the weather is gloomy. In winter and autumn, I don’t understand why people dress in black. Colour is important when the weather is gray, as it often is in cities, be it Paris or elsewhere.

Details inside the atelier of La môme bijou

How do you see the intersection of technology and jewelry design evolving in the next decade?

Isabelle Prat: Today, a lot of jewelry is made with computer-aided design. It’s done by software, and printed in 3D. I call on people who have mastered this knowledge to create certain collections, but I am more on the artisanal side. I really like to do things by hand. I am not too into technology, especially since I decided to start making jewelry with ‘grand feu’ enamel, an ancestral technique. I think it’s good to also keep the old methods for making jewelry.

La Môme Bijou’: Humans as beacons of colour.

‘La Môme Bijou’ is a playground, beckoning to those with youthful hearts. The brand imagines a supercharged world of bright and stimulating people. It is jewelry that dares to be frivolous and irreverent, reclaiming the lighthearted spirit of childhood. The wearer transforms into a beacon of colour, spreading joy and whimsy all around them through beads and bubbles, inviting others to embrace the luxury of play.

How did a spiritual retreat in Peru inspire Spiritum Paris?

Jonathan D.: I went on a shamanic retreat in Peru, with ayahuasca. It is a sacred plant that you take with shamans. When the shaman sings, you go into a trance for six hours. A spiritual retreat with ayahuasca is very deep, where you transform and heal your soul.

Someone asked me my birthday and gave me my life path number. My life path number is one. One is the number of ambition — leader, creator, entrepreneur. This was the big moment of my life that helped me and gave me the creativity to create my brand. I learned the signification of all the numbers. I let my creativity put scents to all the numbers, and I developed olfactive scents.

My brand, It’s not for everyone. It’s for people in spiritual awakening.

How does your brand embrace numerology?

Jonathan D.: Two years ago, I launched my brand with a collection of nine perfumes inspired by the nine numbers of numerology — nine life path numbers. My mission when I launched was just to give people their life path number.

For example, number one is the number of ambition. Number two is the number of intuition. Three: harmony and communication, four: realization, five: protection. As such, I put a special energy in all my perfumes to connect with the person. This is my mission with Spiritum Paris. It’s to make others’ life mission known, to trust in it and follow their destiny.

A memorable story about the creation of your favorite fragrance?

Jonathan D.: For the opening of the shop, I launched ‘Shamanism’. ‘Shamanism’ represents the olfactive memory of my first shamanic ceremony in Peru. The main ingredient of this perfume is sandalwood, since I was wearing a perfume with strong sandalwood notes during my first shamanic ceremony, and we were burning sandalwood incense. It has sandalwood, incense, sage, rose, amber and musk. It’s the fragrance of my life transformation.

How do you believe scent influences the mind, body and spirit?

Jonathan D.: As many people know, sandalwood sacralizes. Sandalwood incense elevates your spirit. Sage purifies and protects. This is the common base of all my perfumes, and I trust in it. All scents have powers, and how I use them depends on the number. For example, rose is connected to the power of love. Woods are strong and give you energy, just like cinnamon and vanilla. When you put on perfume, some scents give you emotion, others memories, others still souvenirs. To help you live your life, the nose has more power than any other senses.

If you could create a signature scent for any historical figure, who would it be?

Jontahan D.: It would be for Gandhi. And it would be a perfume with a sandalwood incense and sage base, and some spicy pepper curcuma (turmeric). Something very woody with incense, because he’s a spiritual person. Everyone in the world knows Gandhi.

How do your fragrances connect people with the natural world?

Jonathan D.: Above all, I work with authenticity and with love. I use good quality ingredients, because you can’t call your brand Spiritum Paris and use plastic or materials that don’t respect nature. For instance, I use cork for my packaging.

Cork is the clothing of the tree. Those clothes regenerate every ten years, so Spiritum Paris doesn’t cut trees. To me, it’s the most sustainable material you can use as packaging. Another example: my bottles are black — I us special paint for the glass because ultraviolet light kills the perfume.

Sometimes people ask, ‘Is your perfume 100% natural?’ I say no, because 100% natural scents is not ideal. Some raw materials are scarce around the world. I use a mix of 50% natural oils and 50% synthetic scents. My perfumes are refillable. If the customers want to refill, they will have to come to the boutique.

What travel destination would Spiritum Paris be?

Jonathan D.: As a destination, I think it’s the cosmos. You don’t have a special destination in this world for the spiritual world.

Spiritum Paris empowers visitors with knowledge of their life mission. They discover their place in the universe. They emerge from the shop walking the spiritual path — towards wellness, soulful living, and balance with nature.

Ecological art is widely recognized as a contemporary art movement. Eco-conscious artists are responding to modern environmental threats, such as climate change, with their artworks. However, eco-art is not a new phenomenon. Aboriginal Australians have centered the environment through culture and spirituality for millennia. When prehistoric climate change occurred, they made sense of land, water, and sky changes through rock paintings. We can understand this as ancient eco-art.

Facing Prehistoric Climate Change

During the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, approximately 15,000 to 7,000 years ago, our planet exited the last ice age and experienced global warming. Rising sea levels transformed Australia. Aboriginal people became prehistoric climate refugees, fleeing inland to escape coastline erosion. Heavy storms flooded the dry continental interior. The landscape became wet and lush green. Waterholes flooded and snakes emerged from underground, while unknown creatures like pipefish washed ashore and rainbows appeared overhead.

Lush green forest, guenterguni, 2011.

Embracing Ecotheology: The Rainbow Serpent

Finally, sea levels stabilized approximately 6,000 years ago. In Arnhem Land, where many Aboriginal people today maintain their traditional culture, the climate settled into dry season and monsoonal wet season. Around this time, Aboriginal rock paintings began depicting the ‘Rainbow Serpent.’ This powerful creature is an Ancestral Being — known for creating the universe. It is associated with water, life-giving, and fertility.

Rainbow Serpent, John Speight, 2019.

When prehistoric climate conflicts ensued, Aboriginal people responded with ecotheology, aligning religion and nature to tackle environmental issues. Belief in Rainbow Serpents spread throughout Australia. Rock paintings told unifying stories of the Rainbow Serpent, who travels between waterholes using rainbows, performing acts of creation and destruction. It causes storms and flooding, ushering in the wet and dry seasons. Colorful rock paintings portrayed Rainbow Serpents, taking inspiration from pipefish, snakes, and rainbows. This ancient eco-art explained climate disruption and normalized the strange creatures washed ashore.

Rock Paintings Affirm Life

Rock painting in northern Australian cave, Darrell Lewis, 2023.

Aboriginal people expressed ecotheology through artistry. Rock art encouraged them to brave climate change, drawing strength from shared culture and common origins. Art-making rituals are communal and life-affirming. Artists paint human, animal, and plant life using rainbow colors to show pulsing vitality. The more ‘rainbowness’ something has, the greater its life force and spiritual essence. They repaint the paintings of their ancestors to rejuvenate the colors and connect past, present, and future.

Wilton Rock Art Shelter, Hiking the World.

Rock paintings pass down intergenerational wisdom and moral philosophies regarding the environment. Aboriginal people believe the cosmos is a living, breathing system. All of nature is interconnected, and they share kinship ties with all creatures. They ‘mind the universe,’ and the universe cares for them. As a result, the principle of mutual reciprocity governs their interactions with ecosystems. Aboriginal people view themselves as custodians of land, water, and air. Nature provides for them and enriches their culture in return. Their relationship to the environment is not exploitative — but mutually beneficial.

Eco-Art Shifts Our Paradigm

Aboriginal eco-art should inspire contemporary artists and environmentalists. As climate change unfolds today, we face the prospect of global migration and climate conflict. Aboriginal people endured climate chaos millennia ago. In response, they built an environmentally-conscious society that continues to advocate for ecological conservation. We have the opportunity to welcome a similar paradigm shift.
